Skylights come in all shapes and sizes: rectangular, round, pyramid, etc. However, architects don’t specify them purely for aesthetic reasons; there are other more tangible benefits. In this post we explain.
One of the great things about skylights is you don’t plug them in — light is sourced directly from the sun. Though you can’t get by with skylights only (night time puts paid to that), having them means you use less artificial light. In fact, studies show skylights can help reduce electricity consumption by as much as 10%.
Energy savings are great. However, perhaps, the most compelling reason for installing skylights is good health. The sunlight skylights bring into your home can prevent deficiencies in vitamin D and B1. Sunlight is a natural disinfectant. It stunts the proliferation of nasty organisms as well as mould and mildew — which cause havoc with asthmatics or people with allergies. Finally, natural light simply makes us feel good. How do you feel when your home is dark and dingy? Enough said.
A short case study
We recently helped a client in Herne Bay, Auckland. In order to enjoy the benefits of natural sunlight, he had skylights specified for his home. He wanted a cantilevered glass system over an eve with ventilation incorporated in the base of the frame. His design was quite abstract with unusual design features. There was a problem, though: he was unhappy with what the architect had specified. He wasn’t convinced the skylights wouldn’t leak. That’s when we got a call. Problem solving On this job, all the upstands in the roof had already been constructed, so we had to make do with what was already there. Solving problems, you might say, is our specialty. And we attack any problem by first talking to the client. We need to understand the issues and what needs to be achieved. The client was a practical bloke, and it didn’t take long for us to come up with a solution.
What we came up with was a nice, clean, bespoke design using our Hi-Spec product. Hi-Spec isn’t the cheapest product on the market, but the client was happy to pay a little bit more for peace of mind. Hi-Spec is a bespoke product for larger units. As the name suggests, it is made of superior materials that don’t corrode when exposed to outside elements. We built four skylights in all. The client was pleased with the result and, most importantly, he was confident that they wouldn’t leak.
